Ottawa lobbyists: Electric eels in Harry Rosen suits

My keen investigative mind, and commitment to democracy, has just recently made me a fan of The Sixth Estate, a blogger who seems to know not only where the bodies are buried, but what they are wearing.

If you want to see how far the Stephen Harper Hole in the Wall Gang has fallen, you simply must read this blog today. In it, Sixer lists the many friends of Stephen Harper who have crossed Wellington Street and taken up residence in the spacious offices of lobbying firms.

For my part, I detest lobbyists. I was involved in politics in the early days of lobbying before it became an economic sector in Canada. I watched many of my former colleagues wine and dine politicos and government officials during the time between elections, then take up valuable space on election campaigns. I saw them join forces with their avowed enemies in the quest for the big payday. They all became very rich and bought big, expensive houses in Rockcliffe Park (Tier A lobbyst) and Manor Park (Tier B lobbyst).

It made me very sick to see people I respected turn into electric eels at the sight of piles of money, abandoning all principles, in favor of a better offer. It wasn’t just politicos who turned to the dark side; a lot of my former journalism colleagues who used to wear rumpled suits were now dressing Harry Rosen, abandoning their townhouses in Beaconhill and buying cottages beside Peter Mansbridge in the Gatineaus.

Now the Tories, it appears have taken the Liberal game and honed it into the Canadian version of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?
